Our Story

Saturday Art Market was born out of the collaboration of Mimi Seykora and Sandy Susag ---who had previously worked on several other Community Art Projects.

Saturday Art Market started 4 years ago on a small, intimate scale. Six or seven artists faithfully showed up every Saturday for 13 weeks. Music was added to the mix and next came a coffee truck. The attendance has seen a steady surge over the past 4 years. Although only a rough estimate, a hand clicker counting of the 2nd year estimated the attendance at over 11, 000 people. The next year it was 13,000+ and this past summer the group was astounded to see the remarkable growth to over 17,000 attendees. People have stopped from over 11 other countries, almost every one of the 50 states, and over 80 cities in the State of Minnesota. Saturday Art Market has established firm roots as a destination. It has unlimited opportunity for growth and hopes to expand its current number of exhibitors to 50 vendors ---- all contributing to original art. The event is a juried process and welcomes any and all newcomers.

Community Partnerships

Saturday Art Market is an opportunity for the general public to not only purchase from but to engage with many and varied artisans. We have partnered with the local Farmers Market to help support each other in a shared space ---Big Ole Park. We each benefit from the clientele that is unique to each of our offerings. We receive financial support from the local DownTown Merchant association and from individual members who are arts focused. We apply for and have received financial support from local sources such as the REA Operation Round-up grant process and we have been consistently aided from the Explore Alexandria group. Our local Chamber of Commerce has been a longtime encouragement of what started out to be a small venture by two women who are always looking for more ways to promote art. We welcome private donations and are currently working with the local Rotary club to raise funds to construct a community public picnic shelter on the backside of the existing rest area. This shelter will benefit everyone who stops by to take pictures of BIG OLE or perhaps are on a bike ride or hike on the Central Lakes Trail that runs through this park. We have had a great working relationship with the Alexandria Park Department finding ways to improve the amenities that are currently available and always expanding the possibilities by adding new ones.
